Effects of Dietary Nucleotides on Growth, Immunology, and Disease Resistance of Juvenile Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). (December 2011) Maritza Anguiano, B.S., Texas A&M University Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Delbert Gatlin Dr. Alejandro Buentello In order to improve production efficiency and profitability in tilapia aquaculture, further research is needed to develop methods to improve weight gain, feed utilization, and immune function of these fish. In this regard, numerous studies with several fish species have reported that dietary nucleotides can enhance growth performance, immune responses and disease resistance. Therefore, two feeding experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of a purified nucleotide mix on juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. A basal diet was formulated to contain 34% crude protein from fishmeal and soybean meal. A nucleotide mix containing salts of cytidine, uridine, adenosine, inosine, guanosine, and thymine was supplemented to the basal diet at 0.5, 1 and 2% of dry weight. In the first experiment, three replicate groups of 15 fish were fed the experimental diets. At the end of 8 weeks, weight gain, feed efficiency and survival were computed. Blood samples were analyzed for neutrophil oxidative radical production and plasma lysozyme activity. In the second trial, three replicate groups of 20 fish were fed the same experimental diets. At the end of 4 weeks, blood and kidney samples were

Effects of herbs and spice on health status of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) challenged with Streptococcus iniae

Effects of different herbal extracts on the growth and immune defense of fish were researched in the last decade. The aim of this study was to determine the dietary effects of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) as a feed additive on haematology, innate immune response, and disease resistance of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). ...

The effects of dietary carbohydrate on the growth, antioxidant capacities, innate immune responses and pathogen resistance of juvenile Black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus.

The present study was focused on the growth, antioxidant capacities, innate immune responses and pathogen resistance in juvenile Black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus fed with graded levels of dietary carbohydrate (CHO) (0.6, 106.5, 194.3, 288.4, 379.1 and 473.8 g kg(-1)) for 9 weeks. Results showed that highest weight gain and special growth ratio was obtained at 288.4 g kg(-1) dietary CHO. And ad...

Anticardiolipin Antibodies in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Background: Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) can either occur as a primary syndrome or associated with other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) of IgG and/or IgM isotype in blood, measured by a standardized ELISA is the most acceptable laboratory criteria. APS IgG isotype, particularly IgG2 subclass is more strongly associated ...

Antigen-Specific Antibody Response in Juvenile-Onset SLE Patients Following Routine Immunization with Tetanus Toxoid

Background: Infection is now the most common cause of morbidity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). There is lack of information regarding the specific antibody forma-tion in response to vaccines in young SLE patients. Objective: To determine the efficacy of anti-tetanus antibody response in young patients with SLE. Methods: Forty SLE pa-tients with mean age of 14.1 years (range: 7-21) and 6...

Immunostimulatory effect of the aqueous leaf extract of Phyllanthus niruri on the specific and nonspecific immune responses of Oreochromis mossambicus Peters

Plant derived immunostimulants are a promising alternative to chemotherapeutics and also perhaps vaccines. In the present study, we examined the immunostimulating properties of aqueous leaf extract of Phyllanthus niruri, an Indian traditional medicinal herb, on neutrophil activation and antibody response of Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters). Serial ten-fold diluted doses of P. niruri ranging fro...
